Iyengar Yoga

Yoga allows you to rediscover a sense of wholeness in your life. Where you do not feel like you are constantly trying to fit broken pieces together.

B. K. S. Iyengar

At Half Moon Yoga, we teach Iyengar yoga – a dynamic form of Hatha yoga developed and taught by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar. Asana (posture) practice in Iyengar yoga focuses on:

  • alignment of the body
  • repetition of the postures
  • sequencing of the postures
  • timings of the postures
  • breathing in the posture
  • developing a balance of strength and flexibility
  • the use of props for support and awareness

Iyengar yoga is known for its emphasis on precise bodily alignments, timings, props and sequencing. These techniques allow yoga practice to be approached flexibly according to the needs of individual students at different times of their lives.

Props such as blankets, bolsters and belts may be used to facilitate alignment and support in the asanas. Precise alignment of the body helps to correct postural imbalances. Correct alignment brings a sense of freedom and equilibrium. It is this alignment that is refreshing to the body and mind and it leaves us feeling restored after a class.
